An annulment (declaration of invalidity) may be granted for any number of reasons. “The Church, after an examination of the situation by the competent ecclesiastical tribunal, can declare the nullity of a marriage, i.e., that the marriage never existed.” Catechism of the Catholic Church #1629 The annulment process never begins without a formal divorce decree first being issued by the county court. Anyone attempting to marry after a divorce, and without an annulment, is automatically entering into an invalid marriage and should contact a parish priest or deacon to validate the marriage in question.
